a note on the plan

Drawn from the way we live

The brands I design end up in people's homes. On kitchen shelves, beside beds, on coffee tables and in gift boxes. So I thought, why not make a home for the work itself?

Drawn from the way we live, this portfolio is a floor plan of my creative world. The kitchen is for experiments, the living room is for conversations, the bedroom is for ideas, and the meeting room is for client work. A little bit of everything, under one roof. Call it knowing every room in the house.

Hello, I'm Sonali, a packaging and illustration designer who has been building brands since 2018. I design for food and lifestyle brands, from the pack on the shelf to the website on your phone. I also run my own brands, so I design the way a founder thinks.

F&B understanding

I design with appetite appeal, perception and consumer psychology in mind.

Packaging-first thinking

Built for shelves, marketplaces and Instagram.

Founder mindset

I build my own brands: Uma's Kitchen and Paper Scissors Co.

End-to-end execution

Packaging, digital, content and retail under one roof.

Product-first approach

I understand how people pick up, open and use physical products.

Illustration is where I started, and it's still the thing I'd do every day for free.

Pages from Destructive by Nature, cards and calendars for Paper Scissors Co., packaging art and life drawing. Tap any piece to see it up close.

Presentations

Decks that make a complicated story easy to follow and hard to forget. Every deck starts with the story, then the structure, then the slides.

Behind the scenes

Where the sketches, swatches and test prints get made. Messier than the meeting room, and more fun.

House recipe · serves one brand

A brand that sells

Ingredients

  • 1 honest brief
  • A handful of shelf and competitor photos
  • The founder's story, unedited
  • 3 to 5 colours pulled from the product itself

Method

  1. Listen first. Taste the product, read the reviews.
  2. Moodboard and sketch by hand.
  3. Build the identity and test it on the actual pack.
  4. Print, hold, photograph, fix.
  5. Carry it to the website, the shelf and the feed.

A book in progress

What colour is your coffee?

Every food carries a palette. A dessert can hold the browns of a wooden floor, a jar of honey can hold a whole sunset. This is a book I'm writing about noticing those colours and carrying them into other parts of life: clothes, rooms, furniture, brands.

How each page works

  1. Photograph or sketch one food.
  2. Pull out its three main colours.
  3. Notice the textures and shapes.
  4. Use the palette somewhere new.

Books I'm reading

  • A Court of Splintered Harmony

Sarah J. Maas. The new A Court of Thorns and Roses book, for switching off.

  • Steal Like an Artist

Austin Kleon. A small book about collecting influences and making them your own.

  • Buying Love in India

On how love, gifting and money mix in Indian life.

Things I noticed

  • The Steel of India, Jindal Steel

A steel company selling a feeling instead of a material. The campaign ties the product to the grit of everyday Indians.

  • Bonga Bonga

A mystery liqueur that turns not knowing what's inside into the whole brand, from the name to the website.

  • Georges Hobeika on design

At its heart, couture fashion is an art form. The Lebanese couturier on why craft and detail are what make people treasure a piece.

Off the clock

A Taurus at heart

Slow mornings, good food and beautiful objects, plus the stubbornness to redraw a layout until it feels right. Off the clock I host long dinners, keep a journal, sketch whatever is on the table and travel mostly to eat. I'm also writing Chutkule Kisse of Uma Ben, a book of family stories and recipes, and Letters to Zhang Linghe.
